Because of my prior experience in directing the newscast and an open spot on Fridays, I have been paid to direct Friday newscasts, and to train another student to direct full newscasts. The March 4 newscast is one of many newscasts I have directed.

Director responsibilities include marking, printing, and distributing the rundown to the production team, as well as directing the rehearsal and live show. This includes instructing the floor director how to set up cameras, queueing the audio director when to sound mics or video, queueing the technical director when to roll video or take to cameras, and communicating with news producers to ensure the show runs on schedule and is the best quality possible.

One day both the production team leader and Technical Director called out sick. I was asked last minute if I could technical direct the show, and accepted. I have since technical directed multiple shows.

Technical directing includes working the switch board, putting video in preset view and preparing to transfer it to the live screen while hitting a separate button to play it. They are also responsible for putting on supers for people appearing in the newscast. The technical director must be familiar with both the switch board and the rundown so they can anticipate what video needs to be prepared next. It is an extremely high-paced job and even the smallest mistake can require restarting the entire show.

From March 7 through March 11, Arizona State University was on Spring Break. In lieu of normal shows, I was tasked with editing together clips from prior newscast into full length newscasts to air while on break.

In total, I created 5 newscasts. The playlist can be found here.
